Acne

The world’s most common skin disease is acne (acne vulgaris), affecting around 80-90 % of all people at some time during their life. With the beginning of puberty at about 11-12 years of age and the physical changes that come with it, this skin condition is most common in adolescents, but can also occur through adulthood (acne tarda). The production of male hormones (androgens) increases in both boys and girls during puberty, which leads to increased sebaceous gland production. Sebum forms an oily layer on the surface of the skin, which protects the skin and keeps it supple. As long as the sebum can clear unobstructed, excess sebum production simply results in really shiny skin. Only if the flow from the sebaceous follicle to the surface of the skin is disturbed, the conditions are set for acne to develop.

The production of male hormones (androgens) increases in both boys and girls during puberty and leads to an increased sebaceous gland production.

New skin cells are formed in the sebum follicles and together with the sebum, they travel to the skin’s surface, where they are desquamated as keratinocytes (cornified cells – sometimes visible as skin flakes). In case of keratosis or an error in the natural desquamation process, which encounters an overproduction of the sebaceous glands, the excretory duct will be blocked. A plug of dead skin cells and sebum develops, the so-called comedo, blackhead or pimple. As the newly produced sebum cannot reach the surface anymore, the skin is not sufficiently protected. A breeding ground for bacteria is created, which may lead to severe inflammation of affected skin areas. If the contents of the closed comedo are released (e.g. squeezing pimples), the inflamed contents of the pore spread to infect the surrounding tissue and the adjacent cells of the affected skin layer. To get this skin problem under control, it is recommended to consult a skin expert for regular and professional cleansing, as well as keeping with a strict application routine with individually adjusted skin care products.
